Project Overview & Homeowner Objectives in Grove City & Pine Township
When homeowners in Grove City, PA—from historic tree-lined streets near Grove City College and Barmore Avenue to country properties in Pine and Liberty Townships—invest in a hydrotherapy spa or infrared sauna, they quickly discover that retail spa dealers simply drop the unit at the end of the driveway. Safely supporting a 5,500-pound filled hot tub and wiring high-amperage 240V power outdoors in snow country requires licensed structural and electrical precision. In this turnkey backyard wellness project, we engineered and poured a reinforced concrete spa pad, constructed a cedar privacy enclosure, and completed full code-compliant electrical and plumbing hookups for both an 8-person luxury hot tub and an adjacent FAR infrared sauna.
Property Profile & Pre-Renovation Challenges
Placing a multi-ton hot tub on plastic gravel pavers or a thin 3.5-inch unreinforced patio slab in Mercer County’s wet clay soil leads to uneven frost settling, which twists the acrylic spa shell and voids the manufacturer’s warranty. Furthermore, improper DIY spa wiring creates lethal shock hazards in wet environments.
Scope of Work & Turnkey Single-Team Execution
- Excavation and pouring of a heavy-load 6-inch reinforced concrete spa pad engineered for zero winter frost heave.
- Complete hot tub installation and luxury spa and FAR infrared sauna assembly.
- In-house licensed NEC Article 680 240V electrical wiring and plumbing frost-free refill station installation.
Heavy-Load Concrete Pad Engineering & Freeze-Thaw Stability
Supporting 5,500+ Pounds of Concentrated Hydrostatic Load
A filled 450-gallon hot tub with six occupants exerts over 5,500 pounds of concentrated dead and live load. Our crew excavated 12 inches of topsoil and clay down to virgin sub-grade, installed non-woven geotextile stabilization fabric, and compacted a 6-inch bed of angular 2B crushed limestone. We formed a 12×16-foot pad with a dead-level footprint beneath the spa zone (so water sits level across all perimeter jets) and a subtle 1/8-inch-per-foot drainage pitch on the surrounding walkway. Inside the forms, we tied a #4 steel rebar grid at 12-inch on-center intervals elevated on chairs and poured 6 inches of 4,500 PSI air-entrained concrete finished with a slip-resistant broom texture.

GFCI Disconnect Sightlines, Schedule 80 Conduit & Equipotential Bonding
Before pouring the concrete, our in-house licensed electricians bonded the steel rebar grid with a solid #8 bare copper equipotential bonding conductor in strict compliance with NEC Article 680.26 to eliminate stray voltage gradients around the wet perimeter. We trenched 18 inches underground using heavy-wall Schedule 80 PVC conduit from the main 200-amp basement load center to an exterior weatherproof 50-amp Square D GFCI spa disconnect mounted on the privacy post—positioned exactly 7 feet from the water’s edge (meeting the mandatory 5-to-10-foot NEC sightline rule). From the disconnect, we routed liquid-tight flexible non-metallic conduit (LFNC) with #6 AWG THWN-2 insulated copper conductors directly into the spa pack control terminal, plus a dedicated circuit into the three-season enclosure to power the Low-EMF Carbon-Wave FAR Infrared Sauna.
In-House Frost-Free Plumbing & Privacy Carpentry
To make quarterly spa water changes effortless even in January, our in-house plumbers installed a Woodford Model 22 frost-free hot-and-cold mixing exterior faucet right beside the patio, while our carpenters built a custom Western Red Cedar louvered privacy screen and overhead pergola with dimmable LED Bistro lighting.
