Project Overview & Homeowner Objectives in Gibsonia & Richland Township
Across the spacious acre-plus properties of Gibsonia and Richland Township, PA—from Bakerstown Road and Hardies Road to estates bordering Hampton Township—homeowners are turning their backyards into full-scale culinary and entertaining resorts. For this project, the homeowners wanted to replace an uneven, weed-choked brick paver patio with a 650-square-foot stamped concrete terrace featuring a built-in stone L-shaped outdoor kitchen, bar seating for six, and a sunken natural gas fire pit lounge.
Property Profile & Pre-Renovation Challenges
The previous paver patio had been laid over a shallow sand bed directly atop heavy Western PA clay soil, causing severe winter frost heaving and pooling rainwater against the home’s basement foundation wall. Additionally, the homeowners were tired of swapping propane tanks and running indoor extension cords out the sliding glass door.
Scope of Work & Turnkey Trade Coordination
- Deep clay excavation, underground stormwater leader routing, and compacted crushed limestone sub-base installation.
- In-house licensed plumbing underground gas/water trenching and electrical conduit installation prior to the pour.
- Pouring and stamping of a 4,500 PSI air-entrained concrete patio and masonry construction of a custom outdoor kitchen.
Sub-Base Engineering, Underground Utilities & Freeze-Thaw Concrete Chemistry
In-House Gas Plumbing, Drainage & Electrical Rough-Ins Before the Pour
The huge advantage of hiring Dependable Home Solutions is that our licensed mechanical trades lay all underground infrastructure before a single yard of concrete is poured. After excavating 11 inches of expansive clay soil, our plumbers trenched a 1.25-inch underground polyethylene natural gas line with anodeless metallic risers sized to supply 225,000+ BTUs to both the 40-inch grill, side burner, and fire pit simultaneously without pressure drop. We also installed a seasonal PEX water line with an interior basement shutoff and compressed-air blow-out port for effortless autumn winterization, plus buried 4-inch solid PVC roof downspout leaders discharging 40 feet downhill. Simultaneously, our electricians ran Schedule 80 PVC conduit for weather-resistant 20-amp GFCI outlets and low-voltage under-counter LED strip lighting.
6-Inch Compacted Limestone Base & 4,500 PSI Air-Entrained Stamped Concrete
Over commercial geotextile fabric, we compacted 6 inches of angular #57 crushed limestone in two vibratory lifts, pouring thickened 12-inch deep perimeter footers beneath the outdoor kitchen footprint. We poured a 5-inch slab of 4,500 PSI exterior concrete formulated with 6% microscopic air entrainment and polypropylene fibers, supported by a #4 deformed steel rebar grid elevated on chairs in the center of the slab. Using Brickform Ashlar Cut Slate mats, integral iron-oxide pigment, and two coats of breathable penetrating solvent-based acrylic sealer, we achieved the authentic look of natural Pennsylvania bluestone without a single weed joint.
Masonry Outdoor Kitchen Construction & Richland Township Code Compliance
CMU Block Framing, Stacked Stone Veneer & Leathered Granite
Unlike wood-framed outdoor kitchen islands that rot or warp, we built the L-shaped island out of reinforced 8-inch CMU concrete block and cement backerboard with stainless steel ventilation louvers, clad in freeze-thaw-rated Eldorado Stacked Stone veneer and topped with 3cm leathered Black Pearl granite—choosing a textured leathered finish that hides outdoor dust and resists thermal shock in direct sun.
