Project Overview & Homeowner Objectives in Kittanning, Ford City & Worthington
Across the outdoor-recreation communities of Worthington, West Kittanning, Manor Township, and the Allegheny River valley around Kittanning and Ford City, PA, many homeowners own fifth-wheel campers, Class-A motorhomes, pontoon boats, and utility tractors that suffer rapid roof-membrane rot and UV oxidation when left parked in the elements. In this turnkey site-and-structure build off Route 422, our clients needed a rock-solid 24×40-foot steel carport with a 14-foot clearance height to house their 36-foot fifth-wheel RV and pickup truck, built atop a heavy-duty reinforced concrete pad with a dedicated 50-amp shore-power hookup for battery charging and pre-trip refrigerator cooling.
Property Profile & Pre-Renovation Challenges
Cheap online carport sellers drop off thin 14-gauge horizontal-roof tube frames pinned straight into raw dirt with mobile-home auger spikes—structures that routinely collapse under a single 18-inch wet Armstrong County snowstorm or rip out of the mud during a spring microburst. Dependable Home Solutions engineers the excavation, concrete slab, structural steel, and electrical under a single contract.
Scope of Work & Turnkey Single-Team Coordination
- Excavation of sloped clay turf, installation of a 6-inch compacted limestone base, and pouring of a 6-inch thick 4,500 PSI reinforced concrete RV pad.
- Erection of a snow-load-certified 12-gauge heavy-duty metal carport and RV cover with vertical roof sheeting.
- In-house licensed electrical underground feeder trenching for a 50A/30A/20A RV power pedestal and LED bay lights, plus plumbing frost-free water hydrant installation.
6-Inch Reinforced Concrete RV Pad & 12-Gauge Vertical-Roof Steel Engineering
Building a Slab That Supports a 16,000-Pound Fifth-Wheel
Standard 4-inch driveway concrete cracks under the concentrated point loads of RV hydraulic leveling jacks. Our crew stripped 12 inches of topsoil, laid commercial geotextile stabilization fabric, compacted 6 inches of angular 2B crushed limestone, and formed a 24×40-foot monolithic slab with 12-inch thickened perimeter edges. Inside the forms, we tied a #4 steel rebar grid on 16-inch centers elevated on chairs and poured 6 inches of 4,500 PSI air-entrained concrete finished with a broom traction surface and saw-cut control joints.
12-Gauge High-Tensile Tubing & Vertical Snow-Shedding Roof
Once cured, we anchored a heavy-duty 12-gauge galvanized structural steel frame (offering 35% higher yield strength than standard 14-gauge tubing) directly into the thickened perimeter concrete using 1/2×5.5-inch Hilti wedge anchors every 4 feet, complete with welded corner knee braces and center truss bows spaced at 4-foot on-center intervals. Crucially, we installed a vertical-panel steel roof system over steel purlins so heavy wet snow slides immediately off the eaves rather than getting trapped against horizontal panel ribs.
In-House 50-Amp RV Shore Power & Frost-Free Water Hydrant
NEC Article 551 Power Pedestal & High-Bay Lighting
Our in-house licensed electricians trenched Schedule 80 PVC conduit from the main house panel to a weatherproof Midwest Electric RV power post mounted inside the carport—providing a 50-amp 125/250V NEMA 14-50R outlet, a 30-amp TT-30R camper outlet, and a 20-amp GFCI circuit, plus two 15,000-lumen motion-activated LED high-bay lights overhead. Right beside the pad, our plumbers installed a 42-inch buried frost-free yard hydrant for easy freshwater tank filling and boat washdowns.
